Arbitrations
With the lockdown and quarantine measures currently in place around the world, more and more arbitrations are considering holding hearings online, and our same-day and realtime transcript service is available using online platforms as well as in-person.
Your Transcript
The password-protected realtime transcript is viewed via a browser, so it can be on any device and resized to fit available windows, using an encrypted data stream over SLL (more details here). A demo realtime feed can be viewed at any time at connect.eclipsecat.com (click demo on left-hand side, green tick).
The transcript will be delivered by email within two hours of the end of the hearing as usual.
All Platforms
Claire has experience of all the common online platforms like Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams, Bluejeans and KUDO, and will record clear audio to facilitate the finalisation of the transcript. Claire is happy to be a non-speaking and non-video participant, but recommends an alternative communication channel like a WhatsApp group for swift communication of audio problems, especially when interpreters are on the call.
Meetings
As internal and external meetings have moved online, all colleagues are able to take advantage of in-program captioning in Zoom, and/or an external link to Streamtext.
The Zoom meeting style, with all attendees using individual microphones and cameras, actually makes it easier to provide accurate remote captioning as the speech is generally clearer than on conference calls or dial-in meetings. Claire wrote about this for the popular deaf blog Limping Chicken.
Zoom
Claire can join the meeting early to set up the captioning with the host, and then all attendees will have a CC button to show that closed captioning is available. Claire will mute and turn off video, and attendees can choose to hide non-video participants so her presence is discreet.
Streamtext
There is a settings window to change the size of the captions, plus an option for a full transcript down the side (instead of the chat window).
Webinars
For webinars and presentations with wider audiences, providing closed captioning makes the content accessible to deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing audiences, as well as useful for those with English as a second language or linguistic processing issues.
Live Feed
The captions can be viewed in-program in Zoom, and/or separately via a browser via Streamtext. If streaming direct to YouTube, Claire can take the captioning API available in the Studio Stream Settings and output direct to YouTube (NB this requires an audio feed direct from the event to ensure correct timing). If AV software is used, a Streamcast black box feed can be used to hard-code captions on to a video feed (https://streamtext.net/demo/ and scroll down to integration/embedding).
In Advance
It is also possible to caption pre-recorded or scripted material if available in advance, by creating another document with approx 93-character lines which are then copied and pasted into the caption box in time with the video, creating 2-line caption blocks similar to TV subtitles.
